Andrew Hettick - Senior Fly Fishing Guide

Andrew Hettick - Senior Fly Fishing Guide

I’m Andrew Hettick, a Montana native who has spent the last 38 years living and exploring this incredible state. From its majestic mountains to the winding rivers that carve through the landscape, Montana has been the backdrop to my entire life. As a dedicated river guide, I’m fortunate to call some of the most renowned fishing rivers in the world my office. My expertise lies in the Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Clark Fork, and Missouri Rivers—each of which offers its own unique challenges and rewards for anglers.

Having lived here for nearly four decades, I’ve come to understand these waters intimately. There’s an undeniable beauty in these rivers, not only in the landscapes they shape but in the stories they tell. Whether it’s the quiet flow of a morning drift or the rush of rapids in the afternoon, guiding on these rivers has become much more than a profession—it’s a lifestyle I’m passionate about.

Experience:

With over 200 days on the water each year, I’ve had the privilege of guiding anglers of all skill levels—from first-timers eager to cast their first line to experienced fishermen seeking new challenges. I work with both hard boats and rafts, which allows me to adapt to different conditions, ensure safety, and provide the best experience possible.

Over the years, I’ve honed my skills and developed an eye for the subtle signs of nature that lead to the best fishing spots. Whether it’s knowing when a hatch will peak or understanding the flow of water after a rainstorm, these moments are what make a day on the river unforgettable. I take pride in making sure my clients have not only an enjoyable time but also gain new skills, appreciate the nature around them, and hopefully catch the fish of a lifetime.

What I Love About My Work:

For me, guiding is much more than just a job; it’s the perfect intersection of my love for nature, my passion for fishing, and my desire to share that with others. I’ve always believed that the best way to experience Montana is by spending time on its rivers—whether you’re casting for that elusive trout or simply soaking in the surrounding beauty.

One of the greatest rewards of being a guide is seeing the joy in my clients' faces when they catch their first fish or finally land that big one they’ve been after all day. There’s a unique bond that forms between a guide and a guest on the water, one built on trust and shared experiences. Helping others connect with nature and experience the magic of the river is what drives me to continue guiding year after year.

Favorite Hatches & Seasons:

Fishing is all about timing, and here in Montana, there are certain hatches that stand out as some of the most exciting times to be on the water. One of my favorites is the Mayfly hatch, which takes place in both spring and fall. These hatches bring fish to the surface in a feeding frenzy, and the action can be some of the most intense and rewarding of the year.

The early spring hatches provide an exciting start to the season, when the water starts to warm up and the fish become active again. The fall, however, offers a completely different type of magic. The cooler air and clear skies often bring some of the best dry fly fishing, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing trout rise from the depths of the river to take a fly from the surface during these hatches.

A Guide Beyond Fishing:

While fishing is undoubtedly the main draw, Montana’s rivers offer so much more. Each river has its own unique ecosystem, and when you take a moment to observe, you'll find that the experience goes far beyond catching fish. Watching the changing colors of the leaves in fall or catching a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead—it’s these moments that I treasure just as much as the fishing itself.

I’ve been fortunate to guide not only fishing trips but also river tours, which have allowed me to share the history, ecology, and wildlife of Montana's rivers with my guests. It’s a chance to dive deeper into the stories of the land and the culture that has shaped this region. Every day on the river is an opportunity to learn something new, and I love passing that knowledge along to others.
