East Fork Bitterroot River Fishing Report – March 7, 2025
Current Conditions:
The East Fork of the Bitterroot is running cold and clear, with flows slightly below average for this time of year. With nighttime temperatures dipping into the teens and daytime highs in the mid-30s to low 40s, expect winter conditions to persist for a bit longer. Snow is still holding in the upper drainage, and while access is decent, some stretches may require extra effort to reach.
Hatches & Fly Recommendations:
-
Midges are the primary hatch, with sporadic surface activity on calm afternoons. Look for rising fish in softer water and back eddies.
- Flies: Griffith’s Gnat (#18-22), Cluster Midge (#18-20)
-
Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) are starting to show up on overcast afternoons, bringing some rising fish to the surface.
- Flies: Parachute BWO (#16-20), Sparkle Dun BWO (#18-20)
-
Nymphing remains the most productive method, especially in slower runs and deeper pools.
- Flies: Zebra Midge (#18-22), Pat’s Rubber Legs (#8-10), Hare’s Ear (#14-18), Pheasant Tail (#16-20)
-
Streamers can move bigger fish, particularly in the warmer part of the day.
- Flies: Olive Sculpin, Mini Dungeon, Thin Mint Bugger
Best Tactics:
Stick to the deeper, slower water where fish are holding during the colder months. A slow, dead-drifted nymph rig under an indicator or tight-line nymphing near structure is your best bet. Streamers should be fished with slow retrieves or dead-drifted along seams and ledges.
Access & River Notes:
- Access points near Sweeney Creek, the East Fork Campground, and Springer Creek are open but can be icy.
- Be mindful of shelf ice and slick banks—wear studs and wade carefully.
- Watch for moose in the upper drainage and be bear-aware as spring approaches.
Outlook:
As temperatures gradually warm, expect BWOs to become more consistent, and fish to move into feeding lanes more aggressively. Late March should bring the first solid Skwala activity, but for now, slow presentations and patience will be key.
