UPDATE: Hoot Owl Restrictions have been LIFTED from Veterans Bridge to the confluence of the East and West Fork. Hoot Owl restrictions remain in effect from Anglers Roost to the confluence of the Clark Fork River, near Missoula.

Here is the Update from the FWP website:

Hoot owl restrictions (2:00 p.m. to midnight) are in effect for the Bitterroot River from the Clark Fork River upsteam to Veteran's Bridge beginning August 14.

Below Veterans Bridge, water temperature measured at the USGS station near Missoula (12352500) show two consecutive days over 73F (July 9, 10), with the third consecutive day forecasted to occur today, July 11. This reach of the Bitterroot River is designated in the Statewide Fisheries Management Plan as a non-native salmonid fishery.

With the lifting of the restrictions on the "Upper Bitterroot", anglers will be able to take advantage of the afternoon hopper fishing and mayfly activity. Look for the Hecubas (large mayfly) to be active around the 2p-5p time frame. Hoppers and ants will be on the menu as well. The upper Bitterroot has the most amount of water throughout the system and will be your best bet for consistent fishing. Stream flows on the lower river is minimal, making floating difficult and the fishing conditions are tough. Look for Tricos in the am - technical, rewarding and frustrating all at the same time.
